MINUTES OF called MEETING OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY commissioners

 monday, september 22, 1958

The Board of County Commissioners met in called session in the County Commissioners Room in the Courthouse at Tavares on Monday, September 22, 1958, for the purpose of requesting a special audit by the Auditing Department of the State of Florida and such other matters as may be brought before the Board, with the following present:  Chairman Simpson; Commissioners Theus, Cowart, Hooten, and Cross; Attorney Duncan; and Clerk Owens.

The Board was called to order by Chairman Simpson.

The Title Search on Alexander Springs Road was given to Attorney Duncan by Clerk Owens.

On a motion by Commr. Cross, seconded by Commr. Theus and carried, the following appraisers were appointed on the Alexander Springs Road from Pitman to Astor Park:  Raymond Hancock, Eustis; Paul Guenther, Pitman; and Frohman Fuqua, Pitman.

Commr. Theus filed the appraisal of L. W. Huey, H. B. Harrell, Jr., and Lee Howard on State Road 25, Sections 1123-101 and 3601-115, beginning north of Lady Lake and extending in a northwesterly direction to the Sumter County line, totaling $13,239 (copy given to C. E. Duncan).

Chairman Simpson announced that when he read the articles in the Clermont Press of September 18 and the Leesburg Commercial of September 21, he thought the Board should be called into session to discuss the criticism, as he feels we are getting a tremendous amount of criticism on the whole Board and thought should get this thing straightened out.  Attorney Duncan said it is my thought that we should bring this to a conclusion quickly by calling in the Auditing Department of the State and know just where we are.  Commr. Simpson called for discussion of the Board as to this suggestion.  Commr. Theus asked Commr. Hooten if this is what he would like to do.  Commr. Hooten said he had not read Sunday’s Leesburg paper, but as far as I am concerned, anything that Mr. Duncan would advise is alright.  Commr. Hooten and Clerk Owens discussed the over-expenditure of the budget by Districts and also the budget as a whole; WHEREUPON, it was moved by Commr. Cross, seconded by Commr. Cowart and unanimously carried that the Attorney for the Board be asked to request the Auditing Department of the State of Florida to make a special audit of the records of Lake County pertaining to the facts set forth in a certain editorial appearing in the Clermont Press of September 18, 1958.

Chairman Simpson gave each member of the Board a thermostat copy of a letter to him from C. Welborn Daniel with a copy of a map attached, which said the letter was published in the Clermont Press September 18, 1958, and filed a copy of the letter and map with the Board.
