MINUTES OF the CALLED MEETING OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY commissioners

ON THURSDAY – JULY 9, 1959

 

The Board of County Commissioners met in called session in the County Commissioners’ room in the Courthouse at Tavares on Thursday, July 9, at ten o’clock AM. For the purpose of considering the Tentative Budget as prepared by Clerk Owens for Lake County for the year 1959-1960, and such other matters as may be brought before the Board, with the following in attendance:  Chairman Simpson; Commissioners Theus, Cowart, Bishop, and Cross; and Clerk Owens.

The Board was called to order by Chairman Simpson.

Clerk Owens read a letter from Commr. Bishop to O. M. Simpson, Chairman of the Board, re:  changes that should be made to the new Juvenile Detention Shelter, and also in regard to furnishing of the Shelter.  WHEREUPON, on motion of Commr. Cross seconded by Commr. Cowart and carried, Mr. Goodson, County Engineer was authorized to proceed with the plans as outlined in the letter and to also construct proper approaches outside the building.

Attorney Duncan read a letter from Attorney General Ervin re:  purchase of land and construction of new County jail.  WHEREUPON, Attorney Duncan and Clerk Owens were authorized to go to Tallahassee to confer with the Attorney General re:  the procedure to follow for the financing of this project.  Clerk Owens was instructed to set up the Budget 2.5 mills for Bond Interest and Sinking Fund to retire a possible indebtedness of $1,250,000.00 for the purchase of land and construction of a new County Jail thereon.  The Clerk was also instructed to set up in the Budget One (1) mill for the purchase of land and construction of an Agricultural building.

Motion by Commr. Cowart seconded by Commr. Theus and carried that Clerk Owens be authorized to transfer $6,000.00 from Contingency Item in the General Revenue Fund to Item 534 – Maintenance of Detention Home.

Clerk Owens was instructed to place on Time Deposit the money in the Armories Fund.

Motion by Commr. Bishop seconded by Commr. Cowart and carried, that the Board tentatively adopt the budget as amended and that Clerk Owens be authorized to advertise the budget in the Eustis Lake Region News in the issue of July 16, 1959, setting the date of public hearing on July 24, 1959, at ten o’clock AM in the County Commissioners’ room in the Courthouse at Tavares, Florida, for the purpose of hearing requests and complaints from the public.

There being no further business, the MEETING ADJOURNED.
