MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING OF BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS on

 monDAY – august 17, 1964

The Board of County Commissioners met in special session in the Courthouse at Tavares on Monday, August 17, 1964, at 10:00 o’clock A.M. for the purpose of receiving bids on road projects and any other business which might be brought before the Board.

Chairman Babb called the meeting to order with the following being present:

 Commrs. Dykes and Livingston; Attorney Duncan and Clerk Owens.  Commr. Cowart cane in later and Mr. Theus was absent.

The following members of the Clermont City Council were also present:

Norris Hutchingson, A. M. Johnson, Charles M. Pool, Jr., and H. S. Turville.

Bids

It now being the time advertised to receive bids for resurfacing Lakeshore Drive, Mount Dora, and Cutoff Road, the Clerk opened and tabulated the following bids:

Macasphalt Corp. – Mount Dora Lakeshore Drive - $.652 per sq. yd.

                                 Cutoff Road                           -    .652 per sq. yd.

Basic Asphalt Corp. – Lakeshore Drive and Cutoff Road - $.645 per sq. yd.

                                                                                                Total $8,854.56

On motion of Commr. Livingston, seconded by Commr. Dykes and carried, the low bid of Basic Asphalt Corp. was accepted.

It now being the time advertised to receive bids in conjunction with the City of Clermont, for resurfacing Minnehaha Lake Shore Drive, the Clerk opened and tabulated the following bids:

Basic Asphalt Corp. - A. $.445 per sq. yd. - $4,672.50

                                    B. $.445 per sq. yd. -   1,988.26

Macasphalt Corp.     -  A. $.44 per sq. yd.

                                    B. $.44 per sq. yd.

On motion of Commr. Dykes, seconded by Commr. Livingston and carried, and the Clermont City Council concurring, the bid of Macasphalt Corp. was accepted.

Bids

On motion of Commr. Dykes, seconded by Commr. Livingston and carried, bids were awarded to the following on items of Courthouse furnishings not accepted on August 10th:

Group 2 – Leesburg Typewriter Service - $1,083.60

Group 1 and 3 – Simons Office Equipment - $4,376.65

Group 4 – Items 1, 2, $ 3 – Simons Office Equipment - $822.40

Courthouse

Motion by Commr. Dykes, seconded by Commr. Livingston and carried, change order was approved for table in the Commissioners Room in the amount of $650.00.

Budget – board of public instruction

Clerk Owens advised the Board members the Board of Public Instruction is holding a special meeting on September 1st at 10 o’clock A.M. to hear complaints regarding their 1964-65 budget.

Roads – county

Attorney Duncan said he has been in contact with officials of the Lake Sumter Junior College and they have been notified if the paving is to come out of secondary funds the title to the roads should be in the name of the Florida Development Commission.  Chairman Babb instructed the Attorney to discuss this matter with the attorney for the School Board.

Municipal corporations

On motion of Commr. Dykes, seconded by Commr. Livingston and carried, Bill Young’s prison crew were authorized to set 100 palm trees along SR 500 through the City of Tavares as a beautification project.

Roads – state

Letter from the Eustis Chamber of Commerce was submitted by Commr. Dykes requesting a directional sign at the intersection of SR 500 and Lakeshore Drive.  After discussing same, the Board denied the request as this is not a proper expenditure of county money and they feel this would establish a precedent and open the door for similar requests.

There being no further business to bring before the Board, the meeting adjourned.
