MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING OF the BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

 thursday – june 4, 1970

A special called meeting of the Board of County Commissioners of Lake County, Florida, was held in the Commissioners’ Room in the Courthouse, Tavares, Florida, on Thursday, June 4, 1970, at 10:00 o’clock A.M. with the following members present:  James R. Carson, Jr., Chairman; Alex J. Macdonell, J. M. Hoskinson, Thomas J. Windram, and Kenneth VanAuken.  Others present were:  County Attorney C. E. Duncan, Clerk of Circuit Court Frank E. Owens and Deputy Clerk Bernice P. Conner.

The meeting was called to order by the Chairman who then announced that the purpose of this meeting is to consider the purchase of heavy equipment for the County; that he has been informed an auction is to be held in Alford, Florida, at which the type of equipment required by Lake County will be offered; that he is further informed most of the equipment is still under warranty from the manufacturers; and that this equipment can be purchased at a considerable saving to Lake County; that he and Commr. Macdonell are planning to attend the auction, and will take with them Alfred Ponds, Road Superintendent for Lake County, to check the equipment; that the Members of the Commission attending the auction should be authorized to bid on behalf of the County.

Upon motion made by Commr. Windram seconded by Commr. Hoskinson and carried, James R. Carson, Jr. and Alex J. Macdonell, as Commissioners of Lake County, were authorized to go to Alford, Florida, to attend an auction of Corbin Trucking Corporation, to be held on the 6th day of June 1970 to view the equipment offered for sale and to bid upon such equipment as is found acceptable; that such bid be made with the view of saving Lake County money; and that the Clerk of the Board be authorized, upon report of such bid, to draw the funds necessary to pay the same.

The Chairman then stated that in explanation of this Special Meeting, the Notice of the auction was received just this week; and that there was not sufficient time to follow legal procedures for the making of a contract in excess of $1,000.00, but that in his opinion, it was an emergency measure which will result in a substantial economic saving for Lake County.

The Chairman and Clerk of the Board were instructed to write a letter directed to Corbin Trucking Company introducing James R. Carson, Jr. and Alex J. Macdonell as Commissioners of Lake County and advising that they were authorized by the Board to bid at said sale; and that the Clerk of the Board was authorized to issue checks in payment of such bills as shall be presented and approved at the next meeting of the Board.

There being no further business to bring before the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
