MINUTES OF called MEETING OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY commissioners

 monday, february 13, 1956

 

The Board of County Commissioners met in called session in the County Commissioners’ Room in the Courthouse at Tavares on Monday, February 13, for the purpose of receiving bids for pipe on Road S-452, Lake Shore Drive, and such other matters as may be brought before the Board, with the following present:  Chairman Singeltary; Commissioners Cowart, Lightfoot, and Simpson; Attorney Duncan; and Clerk Owens.  The Board was called to order by Chairman Singeltary.

Notice having been advertised for bids to purchase 516 feet of 30-inch pipe for use in District #3 and the hour of ten o’clock having arrived, the Clerk announced the time for presenting bids is closed.

The following bids were received and opened:

LAKELAND CEMENT COMPANY, Lakeland and Leesburg

$5.10 per lin. foot delivered, terms 2% 15 days                                 $2,631.60

UNIVERSAL CONCRETE PIPE CO., Ocala

$5.10 per lin. foot delivered, terms 2% 10 days                                 $2,631.60

SHERMAN CONCRETE PIPE CO., Jacksonville

$5.10 per lin. foot, delivered, terms 2% 10 days                                $2,631.60

Clerk Owens announced that Mr. Stokes could not be present today but phoned if bids are equal, to accept bid of the Lakeland Cement Company; WHEREUPON, on a motion by Commr. Cowart, seconded by Commr. Simpson and carried, the bid of the Lakeland Cement Company to furnish Lake County 516 feet of 30-inch concrete culvert at the price of $5.10 per lin. foot or delivery price of $2,631.60, subject to a two-percent discount if paid by the 15th of the month following the date of the invoice was accepted.

On a motion by Commr. Lightfoot, seconded by Commr. Cowart and carried, the Chairman and Clerk were authorized to execute, after approval by the City of Leesburg, the Plat of La Serena Park within the City of Leesburg.  (The Attorney for the Board advised that it is not absolutely necessary for the Board to approve city plats.)

Attorney Duncan stated he has made a request for a title search on the toll road interchange, but as yet has not been advised by the Abstract Company.

Attorney Duncan read a letter from Frank R. Greene, Attorney, enclosing a petition signed by property owners along US 441 just north of Leesburg requesting that the Board revoke its approval of the Plat of Hilldale Subdivision and requesting that a special meeting of the Board be called to hear this petition; WHEREUPON, the Clerk was instructed to notify Mr. Greene and Mr. Leon Mays that the Board would hear the Petition at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 5th at the regular Board meeting.

Joe Heeb of Ocoee appeared before the Board and asked about moving the Dream Boat.  Attorney Duncan stated that Mrs. Stockwell of Eustis has requested permission to acquire the Dream Boat for historical purposes, but if she is unable to work this project out, the County will have to make arrangements to move or sell the Boat.  The Attorney for the Board was instructed to notify Mrs. Stockwell she will have to notify the Board in writing her decision in the matter by the regular Board meeting on Monday, March 5th.  If she does not want the Boat, the County will advertise for bids to sell the Boat.

On a motion by Commr. Cowart, seconded by Commr. Lightfoot and carried, the Appraisal of Elmer Puryear, Sam Post, and R. E. Nash on Villa City Road (S-565) was accepted.

Clerk Owens read a letter from the Florida Board of Forestry advising that Mr. Joseph H. Smith has been employed as County Farm Forester for Lake, Orange, and Seminole Counties, effective January 16, with the office in conjunction with the Soil Conservation Service at 1127 West Central Avenue, Orlando, Florida.
