 TUESday – december 19, 1962

The Board of County Commissioners met in special session in the Office of Frank E. Owens, Clerk of the Circuit Court, in the courthouse in Tavares on Tuesday, December 19, 1962, with the following present:  Commissioner Cowart, Vice Chairman; Commissioner Dykes; and Commissioner Babb.

The meeting was called to order by Vice Chairman Cowart.

Motion by Commr. Babb, seconded by Commr. Dykes and carried that the following resolution be adopted:

TO THE HONORABLE FARRIS BRYANT, GOVERNOR OF FLORIDA, TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA

WHEREAS, the economy of Lake County is based primarily upon the citrus industry and the production of citrus fruit, and any catastrophe materially affecting the citrus industry results in great hardship to those in Lake County who depend upon the citrus industry for maintenance and support, and

WHEREAS, the recent hard freeze, which occurred on the 12th and 13th of December, 1962, has destroyed the citrus crop for the citrus year of 1962-1963 in Lake County, resulting in the loss of employment to those dependent upon the citrus industry for support and creating thereby extreme hardship and possible destitution for such persons, and

WHEREAS, Lake County has no funds to meet such an emergency.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of Lake County, Florida, that the Honorable Farris Bryant, Governor of the State of Florida, be requested to declare Lake County an emergency area and that the funds be made available from State and Federal sources to purchase and distribute to those persons and families made destitute because of the hard freeze the necessary commodities, including food, to sustain persons and families.

MEETING ADJOURNED.
