The Board of County Commissioners met in adjourned session in the Small Claims Office in the Courthouse at Tavares on Monday, October 31, at ten o’clock A.M. for the purpose of awarding bid on fleet insurance and any other matters which might be brought before the Board.
Vice Chairman Babb, Commrs. Theus, Cowart, and Livingston were present, also, Clerk Owens.
Clerk Owens said I believe it will be in order to read the bids in question again as Commr. Theus was not present when the bids were opened on the 28th, said bids being as follows:
OLIVENBAUM INSURANCE AGENCY
NOBLITT INSURANCE AGENCY
On motion by Commr. Livingston, seconded by Commr. Cowart, the bid from Olivenbaum Insurance Agency in the amount of $5,208.95 was accepted by the Board as this was the low bid.
Mr. Olivenbaum being present said the present policy expires at midnight, however, I will confirm this coverage by binder and mail same to the Board.
Judge W, Troy Hall, Jr. appeared before the Board and advised that the Kiwanis Club of Tavares plans to have a series of programs at which the various candidates for governor will be the guest speakers. The speaker today will be Fred Karl and I would like to extend a standing invitation to the Boards and Clerk to come and hear these gentlemen speak.
Mr. Howell Hopson appeared with reference to heat in the Courthouse while the building is being remodeled. Mr. Hopson said he has checked with Val Rich and Harper Plumbing and it will be thirty days before the new boiler can be installed and suggested that some provision be made for heat.
Clerk Owens reported he had contacted the gas companies and the natural gas people had been here yesterday and made a survey of the building. They called back during the afternoon and advised that 18 units would be required at a cost of $800.00 less 25 percent discount, or a total of $600.00, with an approximate installation cost of $600.00. Commr. Livingston said this is expensive for such a short time. The Board concurring, Mr. Hopson was instructed to contact the electrical engineer with reference to installing electric heaters.
Commr. Theus requested that a temporary power hook-up be issued to Mr. Lewis E. Hughes of Lady Lake who has filed application with the Board of Zoning Appeals and the time element is causing a hardship in this case. The Board concurring , Clerk Owens was instructed to notify the Zoning Director to issue a temporary power hook-up to Mr. Hughes while awaiting hearing on his application.
Vice Chairman Babb submitted petition signed by Jimmie Lambert and 58 other persons requesting that the boat landing on Lake Yale known as “DeVault Landing” be opened to the public as the present owner Lynwood Smith has closed the landing. Mr. Babb also submitted four affidavits signed by residents of the area stating that the landing has been in existence for the past 30 years. On motion of Commr. Cowart, seconded by Commr. Livingston, and carried, the Board authorized a public hearing for November 12th at two o’clock P.M.
There being no further business to bring before the Board at this time, on motion made seconded and unanimously carried, the meeting was adjourned.
